Job Description
A Registered Nurse in Nigeria provides professional and holistic healthcare services to patients in various settings, including hospitals, clinics, health centers, and community outreach programs.
The RN ensures the delivery of quality patient care in line with the standards set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) and the Ministry of Health.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care and Assessment:
● Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients’ physical, psychological, and social needs.
● Develop and implement individualized care plans tailored to patient needs.
●Provide hands-on care, including administering medications, injections, and treatments as prescribed.
● Monitor and document patients’ progress and response to treatment.
Clinical Procedures and Skills:
● Perform medical procedures such as wound dressing, intravenous therapy, catheterization, and vital signs monitoring.
● Assist in diagnostic tests, including blood draws and sample collection.
● Operate and maintain medical equipment used in patient care.
Health Education and Advocacy:
● Educate patients and their families on health conditions, treatments, and preventive measures.
● Provide guidance on nutrition, hygiene, family planning, and disease prevention, including malaria and HIV/AIDS.
● Participate in community outreach and health awareness campaigns.
Collaboration and Communication:
● Work collaboratively with doctors, pharmacists, laboratory scientists, and other healthcare professionals to deliver quality care.
● Refer patients to specialists or higher levels of care when necessary.
● Maintain open communication with patients, families, and caregivers.
Compliance and Ethical Standards:
● Adhere to the regulations of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).
● Maintain patient confidentiality and uphold ethical principles in all nursing practices.
● Ensure compliance with infection control and workplace safety protocols.
Administrative Duties:
● Maintain accurate patient records, including care plans, medical histories, and discharge notes.
● Participate in the planning and execution of health programs or initiatives.
● Manage resources and ensure the efficient use of supplies and equipment.
Qualifications
● Registered Nurse (RN) license from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).
● Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited institution.
● Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (or Advanced certifications based on specialty).
● Strong clinical and organizational skills.
● Proficiency in local languages is an added advantage for community roles.
Work Environment:
● Public and private hospitals, primary healthcare centers, schools, NGOs, or rural health initiatives.
● May require shift work, including nights, weekends, and public holidays.
●Physical demands may include prolonged standing, lifting, and emergency response during crises.
